2-12-2014 A letter from John Hummel This is the USS Redfin (SS 272). I served three years on her 1964,65,&66. She was built in 43 and sank 10 ships in WWII. put out of commission in 46, but brought back in 53. they cut her in half and added a 43 foot section and made her a radar picket. they did away with radar pickets when ICBM's came along, so they took all that gear off her and made her just a standard attack boat. she was decommissioned in 68 for the last time. She was my second boat. I use that photo on my QSL card. Her call was NWGC, and my ham call is NW3C that is why I use her on my card. No radioman and ET were two different rates. They don't have radioman any more (RM) they are called intelligence technicians now. (that use was not me) We sent and received radio traffic, copied the fleet broadcast, got comms with aircraft or surface craft and junk like that….check out Navsource.org You can see my ugly mug at the USS Spadefish section (SSN 668).
