Type VIIC U-Boat Models

Type VII C U-boat, the workhorse of the German submarine fleet in World War II, this 1/72 scale plastic kit features a finely scribed hull with simulated rivets and weld seams, a detailed deck with a choice of two conning tower variants, simulated flood valves and vents, optional-position torpedo hatches, movable control surfaces, a rotating 20 mm anti-aircraft gun, an 88 mm cannon, a choice of five markings, and more. The first of a total of 91 type VII C/41 submarines went into service in the summer of 1943. At that time the operating conditions for the submarine crews had totally changed. The tactic of “hunting in packs” used in 1941-42 only rarely led to the successful tracking of convoys and the sinking of individual ships. Modern escort protection forces were successful in shielded the ships and special sub-chaser fighter planes widely patrolled the sea areas where there were submarines.

In order to be better able to defend themselves on the surface against surprise attacks from the air, the VII C/41s received an enlarged fin superstructure known as the “large glasshouse”. The so-called fin IV had aft on its upper platform two 20 mm twin anti-aircraft guns and on a lower platform one 37 mm M42U anti-aircraft cannon. Another feature of these submarines was a snorkel mast that could be brought up from the deck when surfaced to take in fresh air and let out the waste air.

Thus the accumulators could also be operated at higher speed under water and with a full load in daytime. There were 5-man life rafts stored in four water-tight containers on the fore-deck. Thanks to the improvements to structural steel, submarine VII C/41 could dive down to 250 m. With losses of 44 submarines, by the end of the Battle of the Atlantic, type VII C/41 submarines had damaged or sunk 38 Allied ships with aer total GRT of 138,622.

Type XXVII U-Boat Models

A replica of an extended-range Type XXVIIB "Seehund" (Seal) two-man midget submarine, which the Kriegsmarine deployed around the German coast and in the English Channel during the closing months of World War II in Europe, this 1/72 scale, plastic kit features textured surfaces; an air intake mast, a periscope and an observation dome; saddle fuel tanks; two G7e torpedoes; two sets of markings; a display stand; and more. 6" long; 42 parts, skill level 2.   

The mini-sub "Zeehund" was the end result of a development of simple weapons of attack by the German navy towards the end of the Second World War. Due to its slim shape, which could not be located by the then sonar, its quiet engine and good seaworthiness, the German navy had great hopes for the operation of this little weapon of war. The 285 built sank 93,000 GRT of enemy shipping and the French destroyer "La Combattante". A single voyage could last up to seven days, which made enormous demands on the physical and mental reserves of the two crew members.

The deadly U-boat submarines had ceased to present such a deadly nemesis for the British fleet, though the production of the one-man Biber subs by the German Army could have presented a serious threat if the war had continued. These vicious little subs are examined, and the downfall of U-boat mastermind Karl Doenitz is chronicled. Doenitz succeeded Hitler as the titular head of Germany, serving for two weeks before his arrest for war crimes, representing the war's finality in 1945.

The first six months of 1942 saw the war assume a truly global dimension with the entry of the United States into the conflict. For the U-boat arm, the heavy coastal traffic off the eastern seaboard of the U.S. provided such a fertile hunting ground that the high number of vessels sunk led this period to be christened by the submarine crews as the 'second happy time'. The belated introduction of convoy tactics by the US Navy saw U-boat victories off the U.S. coast sink to a low of just three in July 1942. Fuehrer der U-boote Doenitz now set out to exploit the gap in the mid-Atlantic where convoys were beyond the range and protection of allied aircraft. By 1943 the Wolf Packs were inflicting heavy losses on the convoys - the high point of the U-boat campaign in World War II.
