Last Voyage of the Yamato, Naval Aviation Art Print

Last Voyage of the Yamato
Naval Aviation Art Print

In the closing months of the pacific war, Japan was becoming more desperate in the defence of her homeland. The armed forces of Japan had developed more fanatical strategies to thwart the approaching USA war machine. The Imperial Japanese Navy was not immune from this, even though the diminished fleet was but a remnant of its former self. Thus, in April of 1945, the fate of the Yamato task group was sealed in a sacrificial plan to reinforce the defenders of Okinawa.

With only enough fuel to make the voyage from the Inner Sea of Japan to the island, under assault from the combined American and Allied Forces, the world’s largest battleship, together with the light cruiser Yahagi and eight escort destroyers, sailed into the South China Sea. They were tracked by USA submarines through the Bungo Straits, their positions being relayed to USA Task Force 58. There would be no air cover for the Japanese Navy.

At approximately half past noon on April 7, 1945, more than 380 USA planes from Task Group 58 attacked the Yamato Task Group in three separate air waves. In the ensuing battle that lasted a little more than three hours, the Imperial Japanese Navy ceased to exist. Sunk was the battleship Yamato, the light cruiser Yahagi, and four of the eight escort destroyers. The remaining destroyers limped home to Kure Harbor with what survivors they could find from the sunken ships.

The sacrifice for the Japanese was staggering. In addition to the Japanese Navy’s loss of pride, 4250 officers and sailors perished. The loss to American forces were 10 planes and 12 aircrew.

Admiral Isoroku Yamamato, the architect who had planned the attack on Pearl Harbor, had predicted this outcome at the beginning of hostilities more than three and a half years prior to this tragic battle. The giant did indeed awaken and returned with a terrible resolve. It would culminate four months later not far from where the keel for the Yamato was laid: Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

ROBERT BAILEY
Robert Bailey is an Artist Fellow with the American Society of Aviation Artists (ASAA). He was born and raised in Staffordshire, England. He attended Longton College of Art and for years was in television as a photographer and show host, then in newspapers as a designer, photographer and writer. Robert has been drawing and painting warplanes since he was four years of age, but says that he was 'sidetracked' into television and newspaper careers before realizing his dream of becoming an aviation artist.
A professional, best-selling combat artist, he is widely collected in five countries around the world. Robert's wife, Michelle, assists with the ever-expanding business and is most supportive of his striving to make each next painting the 'best one yet.' He produces an average of three or four new limited edition print projects each year. His action-packed, limited edition prints have sold at FOUR times the volume compared to only three years prior.
Robert Bailey has been painting aviation art canvases since 1990. Each one takes approximately four weeks to produce, being about 24" x 42" in size. The studio is full of plastic scale model aircraft, (over 350) tanks and ships. "When people visit the studio, they pay more attention to the models than to what is on the easel," says Robert. At the beginning of a project, the studio is meticulously neat, but by the time the canvas is finished, it looks as though it's been hit by a cruise missile, with reference books piled high all over the floor. "I rifle through the material, find what I'm looking for, and toss it aside," Robert commented.
The artist released a new title about every eight weeks for over three years, traveling all across the USA and Germany to obtain original signatures on the prints. Robert likes to supervise the signings himself, as he loves to meet the pilots and ground-crews of the aircraft he depicts in World War II action. Meeting signees is both the most exciting and final phase of each of Robert's projects. He is privileged to have made many firm friends who once flew for the air forces of the United States, Britain, Canada and Germany.

Another version of this painting is made by Stan Stokes.
Stan Stokes. The huge Japanese battleship Yamato, on a suicide mission to Okinawa late in the war, is attacked by hundreds of aircraft, including these Avengers from the USS Yorktown. 16"x 11" limited edition print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Midway: The Turning Point
Stan Stokes. This dramatic print captures the 1,000 pounder of Paul "Lefty" Holmberg's SBD penetrating the carrier deck of the Soryu while Holmberg pulls out of his dive. In all, SBDs from the Yorktown and its sister ship the Enterprise destroyed three Japanese carriers in a matter of minutes that day. 16"x 11" limited edition print is signed and numbered by the artist.
