Navy SparrowhawksThe Navy Sparrowhawks were deployed in the Airships U.S.S. Akron and Macon, making them flying aircraft carriers. These Airships could Launch, Recover and Store up to five Sparrowhawk aircraft at one time. See the links below to read moreWingspan 25' 11", Length 20' 4", Height 11' 2", Weight 2086 lbs. Please note that the height also included the launch bar. |
The U.S. Navy's miniscule Sparrowhawks operated from dirigibles during the 1930s, and were among the most colorful fighters of the era. Utilized primarily in conjunction with the U.S.S. Akron and U.S.S. Macon airships, the Sparrowhawks also operated briefly from the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lexington. If Anyone knows about how these planes were stored and launched from these dirigibles or know of any links to pages with information about the Sparrowhawk, any of the ships listed above or about this Dirigible launching system, please let me know at the bottom of this page.
