In World War II the Japanese submarines were carrying aircraft as well as the well known torpedo. Now the guided ICBM multiple reentry vehicle MRV missiles can carry many nuclear warheads. K-19: The Widowmaker DVD Movie (2002) Inspired by a true story that was kept secret until the fall of communism, K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER is a tale of ordinary men who sacrifice everything for their shipmates and their country. In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, an ill-prepared Russian nuclear missile submarine embarks on its maiden voyage with near-disastrous consequences. When the sub's nuclear reactor malfunctions, Captain Alexei Vostrikov (Harrison Ford) makes some decisions that are unpopular with the crew. Tensions mount as radiation levels rise throughout the submarine and there is no respite in sight. If the sub explodes, it may cause an international incident as it may be mistaken as an attack on a nearby NATO base and an American Navy destroyer that is in the area. If the sub dives deep below the surface, perhaps the malfunction can be fixed, but the loss of some lives is then inevitable. The Executive Officer, Mikhail Polenin (Liam Neeson), who formerly commanded the sub, can placate the crew, but must decide where his own loyalties lie. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (BLUE STEEL, POINT BREAK), this thriller examines the Cold War from the Russian perspective, an uncommon point of view in American films. | |

The Hunt for Red October In the tradition of DIE HARD and PREDATOR, director John McTiernan presents audiences with yet another techno thriller: THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. Sean Connery plays Captain Marko Ramius, a dissatisfied Russian commander who navigates his submarine towards America in an attempt to defect. Soviet intelligence claims that Ramius is a warmonger and that he plans to launch nuclear missiles at the United States. Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), an iconoclastic CIA agent, believes otherwise: American spies have determined that the submarine is powered by a stealth engine. In order to save the "caterpillar drive" and avoid a nuclear incident, Agent Ryan must board the Red October and assist Captain Ramius in its navigation to U.S. waters. Both murky and captivating, the underwater visual and sound effects are reminiscent of DAS BOOT. Once again director McTiernan produces a winning film with a jagged plot, a well acted script, and plenty of explosions. Operation Petticoat Cary Grant and Tony Curtis star as naval officers in this service comedy, one of the director's favorite genres. When Adm. Matt Sherman's (Grant) submarine, the Sea Tiger, is damaged during the attack on Pearl Harbor, he needs to find spare parts to have it recommissioned. Into the breach steps aide Lt. Nick Holden (Curtis), a master con man and wheeler-dealer who begins scheming to acquire the materials needed to fix the sub while the appalled Sherman looks the other way. Once the sub is deemed seaworthy, they stop at an island where Holden picks up a couple of Filipino families and five navy nurses who have been stranded there. The arrival of the extremely attractive nurses in the sub's cramped quarters has the predicted effect on the young, all-male crew, who soon find concentrating on their work to be an impossible task. The women also have their own ideas about the renovation of the submarine, one of which involves painting it pink. Despite the dated 1950s gender stereotypes, the comic genius of Grant and the energy of Curtis, in addition to a script witty enough to have been nominated for an Academy Award, keep the film afloat. Among the talented cast are Dick Sargent, Arthur O'Connell, Dina Merrill, Gene Evans, and Gavin McLeod, who would later return to the seas as the captain of THE LOVE BOAT. |
Starring Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens and winner of an Academy Award for special effects, this is a study in submarine warfare from both sides of the battle. Mitchum plays the captain of a U.S. destroyer escort caught in a cat-and-mouse game with Jurgens, the honorable and compassionate captain of a German U-boat. And though the two men develop a mutual respect as they pursue one another throughout the North Atlantic, the climax of the chase is both tension-filled and moving. Grey Wolves 1943-1945 This documentary details the end of the Atlantic naval war, which signaled Hitler's defeat and the close of WWII. The deadly U-boat submarines had ceased to present such a deadly nemesis for the British fleet, though the production of the one-man Biber subs by the German Army could have presented a serious threat if the war had continued. These vicious little subs are examined, and the downfall of U-boat mastermind Karl Doenitz is chronicled. Doenitz succeeded Hitler as the titular head of Germany, serving for two weeks before his arrest for war crimes, representing the war's finality in 1945. |
Uboats Grey Wolves 1942-1943 The first six months of 1942 saw the war assume a truly global dimension with the entry of the United States into the conflict. For the U-boat arm, the heavy coastal traffic off the eastern seaboard of the U.S. provided such a fertile hunting ground that the high number of vessels sunk led this period to be christened by the submarine crews as the 'second happy time'. The belated introduction of convoy tactics by the US Navy saw U-boat victories off the U.S. coast sink to a low of just three in July 1942. Fuehrer der U-boote Doenitz now set out to exploit the gap in the mid-Atlantic where convoys were beyond the range and protection of allied aircraft. By 1943 the Wolf Packs were inflicting heavy losses on the convoys - the high point of the U-boat campaign in World War II. New footage helps us understand the on-going battle between hunter and hunted above and beneath the cold, grey waters of the North Atlantic - the most decisive theatre of World War II. |

Starring Cary Grant and Tony Curtis, this 1959 Blake
Edwards comedy tells the story of a fictional American submarine, the USS
Sea Tiger, sunk in the Philippines during the opening days of World War II.
As the crew tries to repair the sub and continue to Australia for the
necessary refit, the voyage includes various detours, including the
acquisition of a group of stranded female Army nurses and a hurried stopover
to overhaul and repaint the submarine in the only available color: pink.
