Night Vision Equipment. Night vision monocular, binoculars and head mounted gear. Night Vision comes in infrared ( IR ) and starlight scopes. Military infrared systems use both a infrared illuminator and a cryogenic ( extremely cold ) detector. The cryogenic type of infrared night vision will show temperature variations through the scope. For example, when you look at a person in a dark field using the cryogenic system, the person will appear as a bright white light in a totally dark field. This cryogenic system will show heat loss from your house or show a person behind a wall. We used this type of night vision system in the prototype Aqulia RPV, ( Remotely Piloted Vehicle ) when I worked for the Department of the Army. We could see that the engines in parked tanks were still warm and bright walking people. The night vision equipment that you see on this page will not give you this kind of display. Instead it shows a green screen image just like seeing in the daylight but in black and white, or in this case, green and white. Starlight night vision is really a very sensitive detector that we commonly see in the zero lux video cameras. This type can show either a black and white image or in color. C. Jeff Dyrek |
