North
Pole Expedition 2002,
We are loading up for the last trek to the North Pole. In this photo you can see the insulated layers inside of the Russian Mil Mi-8 Helicopter. Once that the helicopter takes off, the inside becomes extremely warm, hot to be truthful. It is so hot that you want to open the windows, but when the helicopters doors are opened, do you think it becomes a super chill. This is farther than the truth. The truth is that your clothes and body become heat saturated and stepping out of a super hot helicopter into the -24 to -35 degree Fahrenheit air, is not a shock at all. I was very surprised the first time that I did that. This is what the skydivers experience also, they get heat saturated, then they have no problem with their jumps. The heat saturation last quite a long time. |

We have finally landed at the pole. The door is open and we are ready to exit the helicopter and feel the excitement of standing in the only spot on earth where every direction is south. The man on the left with the blank stare is Fernando Cabral from Brazil and the man on the right is Anand Aithal from Singapore. In the background on the left, holding what looks like a piece of baggage to his face is Global Expeditions a professional photographer and the overall expedition leader.
