The are the two Mi-8 helicopters that we use for travel from Camp Barneo to the North Pole. The Mi-8 is a heavy lift helicopter and has gained much respect in my eyes. We packed this helicopter with people and equipment. It also had an internal fuel tank for an extended range which added to the overall weight. We took off from Camp Barneo and headed for the actual North Pole which was about 100 kilometers, 60 miles, away. Using the satellite phone, we called our ski team which was led by Marek Kamiñski and got a GPS fix for their position. We needed to pick up several skiers because they needed to catch the plane back home before the ski team made it to the pole which was still several days away. Marek and his friend Wojtek Moskal, both from Poland, are some of the most experienced arctic explorers that I have ever met and I must add, some of the nicest people that you can imagine.
