Home of the first airplane flight
North Carolina is nicknamed the Tar Heel state. The population of North Carolina is 6,658,000 people, number 10 of the 50 states, its capital is Raleigh and its largest city is Charlotte. The land area of North Carolina is 48,718 square miles, number 29 of the 50 states, its highest point is Mount Mitchell, 6,684 feet. The Wright Brothers made the first heavier than air flight of the Wright Flyer at Kitty Hawk on one of the barrier islands. The Wright Brothers performed many tests before their first successful flight and all the budgeting and finance had to come out of their own pockets. You can visit Kitty Hawk at the Wright Brothers Memorial location below. |

Air and Aircraft Carrier Museums plus the Wright Brothers Museum.Orville Wright lived from 1871 - 1948 and his brother Wilbur Wright lived from 1867 - 1912.They were the worlds first successful airplane engineers and made the first flight at Kitty Hawk North Carolina on December, 17th, 1903. Even though there were a small number of airplanes which made powered flights before the Wright Brothers, none of them were controllable. Therefore the Wright Brothers received the credit for the first controllable powered, heavier than air flight. There was another reason that they received credit that was not very well known. They received credit because they had organized documentation in which, where anyone that was handy with tools, the airplane could be reconstructed and flown. The fact that the Wright Brothers were able to not only perform their own tests but build the airplanes themselves helped their personal budget where someone who wasn't as handy would have bankrupted themselves before ever getting off the ground. |
