The Fokker Dr-1 Triplane was the most well known of the WW1 airplanes. It was slow and difficult to fly yet it deadly in the hands of an experienced pilot. One of the flight features of this airplane was that it was able to momentarily hang on its prop and shoot straight up into the belly of its enemies airplane. German
Fokker Eindecker
The Eindecker was the first fighter monoplane in WW1 and it was also the first aircraft to fire through the props using a synchronized machine gun where the bullets didn't hit the propeller. Other aircraft on both sides of the conflict allowed firing the machine guns through the propeller but only with deflectors on the prop to keep the bullets from damaging the props. However even with the deflectors, the bullets put considerable stress on the bullets. The Eindecker's synchronized firing mechanism was a major step forward in aerial combat. During the Fokker Scourge in early 1915, for a few months, the Eindecker destroyed the Allies superiority in the air. To keep the Allies from getting the technology of the synchronized machine gun technology, the German pilots were instructed not to dogfight over Allied territory so the aircraft were primarily used to prohibit Allied access to German Airspace. In February 1916, the monoplane was used to control the air over Verdum during the German offensive. By the summer of 1916, the Allied Air Forces regained aerial superiority with the Nieuport 11 "Bebe", the D.H.2 and the F.E.2 Except for the characteristic Fokker tail plane
and the synchronized machine gun, the Eindecker was a direct copy of the
Morane Saulnier "Parasol." The Eindecker did not use ailerons for
banking, instead it used the, Wright Brothers invention of wing warping.
This was true of many of the early monoplanes and biplanes. Even
at the end of the Eindeckers life it didn't use ailerons making it more
difficult to avoid the more nimble enemy aircraft which did use ailerons
in lieu of the wing warping. The Eindecker used a 100 hp Oberursel
rotary engine which was not very reliable. Engine power reduced with
altitude which limited the Eindeckers maximum altitude to about 9800 feet.
Another disadvantage was that the Eindecker took 30 minutes to get to 9000
feet and its maneuverability was very poor at this altitude. The Eindecker
used a single LMG 08/15 7.92 mm machine gun.

I am the official and only full-time historian for Jack Frye (former director
and president (and an original founder) of Transcontinental and Western Air,
Inc. Frye was a close friend of Anthony Fokker and in the late 1920’s the
largest West Coast Fokker distributor. Jack bought many planes from Tony for his
own airline (Standard Air Lines) and his clients. The man on the ground in the
photo is Tony Fokker, and at one time I felt the pilot might be Jack Frye (who
flew to New York-- New Jersey to ferry new planes back to his company in Los
Angeles on many occasions) but further investigation seems to discount this
theory in regard to the date of the image being 1925 (pre-Fokker association for
Frye). However; the pilot in the image is a dead ringer for Frye. The plane
shown is the FVIIa-3m prototype which was displayed nationwide by Tony Fokker
after it was entered in the Ford Reliability Tour of 1925. This plane
subsequently became the first triple engine airliner in America service. |
