Military History Study Notes, CV-66 USS America |
The keel for United States Ship John F. Kennedy was laid
on October 22, 1964 at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in
Virginia. USS John F. Kennedy The USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) is the only conventionally-powered aircraft carrier in the U.S. Navy Fleet, serving as the sole ship in the Navy's Kennedy Class since 1967. Dubbed "Big John," the ship measures 1,050 feet in length and contains more than 80,000 feet of effective landing area on its massive flight deck. Home to 4,642 officers and crew, the John F. Kennedy supports 80 combat aircraft and can travel through the water at an impressive top speed of 30 knots. Since receiving her commission on September 7, 1968, the John F. Kennedy has completed more than fifteen deployments, and has played a vital role in directly supporting American and Coalition forces during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. USS JOHN F. KENNEDY" is primarily about flight-deck operations on the ship. With a crew of 5,800, including 2,500 members of ship's company, the ship prepares for deployment. Aboard are 80+ aircraft including Tomcats. After leaving port, the ship takes on its aircraft with many flight deck scenes. "Man overboard" drill is held and a helicopter picks up "Oscar" after 7 minutes. The flight deck "ballet" continues with the ship's many 60,000-pound planes. "Home from the Sea - USS JOHN F. KENNEDY" is a 1970 Navy film made by the Atlantic Fleet Combat Camera Group. The ship launches its last aircraft as it heads for its homeport at Norfolk, VA.
