This is how the woolly mammoth looked after they excavated it and transported
it by helicopter to Khatanga. When the Jarkov family found the first tusk,
they started digging it out and realized that there was another tusk in a
position that appeared as though it was attached to a skull. After more
investigation it was obvious that this was a significant find. I believe that this mammoth is estimated to be 20,400 years old. There are stairs on the right and a platform where the scientist would stand to study the mammoth. They were using a heat gun to melt the mud and inspect each layer of the mud and the mammoth for types of bacteria, mold spores, and pollen that was present at the time that the mammoth died. When we looked at it there was only a small portion of the mammoth exposed with the brown hairs sticking out of their research area. The scientist spent a lot of time just to get to this point. I'm sure that even our presence was contaminating the specimen. At the rate that they were working, it would take many years before they would have the job completed and it may very well have become a lifetime study. I remember hearing that the locals used the tunnel to store fish in the frozen environment even further contaminating the research project. |
