We are finally off the ground and heading for the North Pole in this impressive Antonov 26 Russian cargo aircraft. This is a picture of the cockpit from back where I was sitting. There were five crew members in this airplane, a pilot, co-pilot, throttle man, engineer and navigator. As we flew I watched the hardest working person on the airplane, the navigator, go through his paces. He was always calculating something, he would then look up at the sextant located on the top of the airplane. He do some more calculations then get up and look through the sextant again. The flight engineer was pretty hard working too. He had to make cup after cup of coffee for the rest of the crew. The one man that just seemed to do nothing but sit was the throttle man. He didn't have to do anything until we landed, then I realized why they needed a throttle man. When we first touched down at Camp Barneo , the North Pole Base Camp, We didn't cover any more than three feet of runway when the throttle man applied full, reverse, thrust. It was a fantastic operation to watch as all of the crew members worked so perfectly together in their efforts to get this large 50,000 pound plane to stop on the all Ice, 3000 foot runway. |
One of our
Expedition Members took this ride to the Edge of Space,
he
said it was absolutely fantastic.
