We were standing, waiting for our plane
to be fueled and this beautiful Antonov An-12 Cub Cargo plane on Sredney Island
began starting its engines. This was great! The
engines were relatively quiet and the plane was huge. It started
the engines one by one then started to taxi to the runway. It took
a long time to get to the end of the runway before the pilot started his
final takeoff checks. The engines revved up and the plane began to
roll. In only about thirty seconds the huge plane was off of the
ground and headed for its, unknown to us, destination. After
a few minutes the plane was no longer visible but its smoke trail could
be seen for a long time. The huge turbine engines were an older design
that emitted incredible amounts of smoke. Definitely not good for
either the environment or the military missions that this plane sometimes
must accomplish.
The Antonov An-12 Cub was the Soviet Union's equivalent of the Lockheed C-130 Hercules: a military and civil transport aircraft of outstanding versatility and longevity. From the mid-1960s onwards there was not a single major event in the history of the Soviet Union where this formidable four-engined transport aircraft was not involved. Though the An-12 first flew as long ago as 1957, it is still in front-line service with many operators around the world to this day. In 1981, the Chinese copy version of An-12 was named the Yun-8 (Y-8) |
