There is a good newsreel clip of the
plane from 1945 showing the plane being rolled out as well as partial
disassembly. The man sitting in the cockpit is my father.
The only digital
copy of it I have located is owned by British Pathe. I do not know if it is available through the National Archives.

Jeff,
Attached is a copy of a Douglas Aircraft factory (now O'Hara Airport)
newspaper article that documents the newsreel clip. It contains a frame out
of the film. Issue Date: 06/08/1945
Full title reads: "THE BAKA BOMB". Okinawa. Japanese suicide Baka Bomb (suicide plane). Close up shot of pilot in cockpit of the Baka. Rudder removed to reveal rockets. Nose removed to reveal torpedo head. (Mute & Track Negs.) British Pathe wants 30 pounds (about 48 for the one minute clip). If I buy it I will let you know. Ann And Children See Newsreel Of Dad In Jap Bomb Ann Black (504-2) and her children, four-year-old James and five-year-old Barbara, sat amazed in a theatre last week, watching the newsreel and seeing their husband and father, Mel Black, climb in and out of a Jap suicide bomb cockpit, demonstrating the captured Nip bomb on Okinawa. Little James let out a squeal and couldn't keep it to himself any longer. He told the whole theatre audience "That's my daddy!" And so it was. Mel, an Elmhurst police officer, on leave, is an aviation ordnance mate in the Navy, and has the unique distinction of serving with Army, the Army Air Force, the Marines, and of course, the Navy. He was on a special intelligence assignment at the time the newsreel was taken on Okinawa and has since gone back to his station at Pearl Harbor where he is an instructor in a bomb disposal unit. He has been overseas since last November. Ann was given a piece of the film by the theatre manager. She has been an employee for 27 months. |
