DC-3 History Notes
Dear Jeff,
I thoroughly enjoyed Stephan Wilkinson's article "Call Her Connie" in the July 09' issue of AVIATION HISTORY.  In the sidebar on page 29 "10 Connie Oddities", I noted in item "4", ..."The first-ever bombed airliner was a Canadian Pacific DC-3 in 1949, when a Quebecois Albert Guay tried to collect life insurance on his wife."  I don't want to sound negative but, Rodney Stich in his book "Unfriendly Skies" and multiple Internet sources recount that the FBI Copyright Dates nitroglycerin bombing on October 10, 1933 of a UAL Boeing 247D (NC 13304) enroute from Cleveland to Chicago, is the first proven case of airliner sabotage in aviation history.  The 247D exploded and crashed at about 9:15pm near Chesterton/McCool, Indiana.  No survivors.
Sincerely,
John D. Bybee

The Curtiss C-46 Commando, similar to the DC-3, was an outgrowth of an airliner design first flown during 1940, and was used extensively in the Pacific Theater during WWII, primarily for transporting supplies over the Himalayan "hump" between India and China.
