B-17 Flying Fortress. In combat, the B-17 had to fight a difficult battle to prove the concept of daylight bombing. In operation through the darkest hours over both Europe and the Pacific, the B17 became the hallmark bomber of WW2 and paved the way for not only for its peers but its successors. England meanwhile had in the Lancaster possibly the finest strategic bomber of WW2 on a payload / range basis and chose a different operational path than the Americans in optimizing their aircraft for night operations against Germany. The development and operational record of this fine aircraft is fully detailed and backed up by a plethora of never before seen photos and specially commissioned artwork. The ultimate heavy bomber of the era was Boeing's B-29. Pressurized, able to fly above the flak, computerized, and armed to the teeth with automatic defensive .50 caliber guns, the B29 flew missions over distances not even imaginable a decade earlier and ushered in a new era of large aircraft design that would give birth to both the long range airliners and bombers of the postwar era. |

model of the Little Boy atomic bomb - which was dropped by the B-29 Enola Gay over Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945 - is signed by Enola Gay weapons test officer Morris "Dick" Jeppson. Measures 13" longOf all the bombs that existed during the Second World War, the “Little Boy” Atomic Bomb may well be the most famous. First used in warfare in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the “Little Boy” was the nuclear weapon that ended World War II. The amount of energy generated by an exploding “Little Boy” atomic bomb was the equivalent of a 15 kiloton TNT explosion—despite its relatively small size. The ultra-high air pressure that resulted in a very powerful blast consumed half of that energy; when the explosion generated heat, it consumed one third of the rest of the energy, while the remaining energy was consumed in the creation of radiation.
The Fat Man Atomic Bomb was the second and last nuclear bomb that was dropped on the Japanese empire to help end WWII. The plane that carried this bomb to its destination was the B-29 named Bockscar. Plutonium 239 was the nuclear fuel used for the explosion which was only the size of a softball but weighed 13.6 pounds. This atomic bomb was 10 times more powerful than the one dropped on Hiroshima (Little Boy). Fat Man exploded over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 with an explosive power of 21,000 tons of TNT. |

Bill Streifer Richard Barr Here for the Official Home Page of the Hog Wild B-29 Superfortress over Korea, another, but super secret, Gary Powers incident. From the Webmaster: I personally know the author of this book and he has done more in-depth study than any person that I have ever known. He is working with a Russian author on this project and has worked for more than two years, continuously, to find the secrets of the Japanese Atomic Bomb which they were four months from completing before we dropped our bomb on Hiroshima. Here's a link to his research assistants. C. Jeff Dyrek. |

Study Notes |
From 1949 until the advent of the jet age ten years later, the Boeing 377
was the embodiment of high-class luxury in the skies. It had proven wings, tail,
and power from the B-29 bomber, and the double fuselage allowed for two decks -
connected by a spiral staircase - with a lounge, bar, galley and sleeping
compartments. On May 23, 1945, Mission #181 is undertaken by the B-29s of the 20th Air Force against Tokyo, Japan. The incendiary bombs dropped that night would turn the Japanese capital into a raging firestorm. The print shows a stricken B-29 named Eddie Allen coming off the target with a fire beginning near the #1 engine from a dud anti-aircraft round. Major Charles W. Sweeney, commanding officer of the 393rd Squadron (see his book War's End, also available), is the pilot in command of aircraft No. 297, nicknamed "Bockscar," on its way to drop the atomic bomb on Nagasaki. The second B-29 is "Full House," carrying photographic equipment and scientific personnel. Named after Boeing test pilot Edmund T. "Eddie" Allen. This B-29 flew 24 missions before being severely damaged - almost unable to return to it’s base on Tinian Island. With its four mighty engines, this propeller-driven bomber brought WWII to an end, dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Almost 4,000 of these massive bombers were built and used exclusively against Japan. |
Dear Sirs, Bill Streifer on Long Island, NY is doing research for a book on the subject of Japanese/Soviet and North Korean development of nuclear/chemical weapons at Hamhung, Korea. I am attempting to trying assist Mr. Streifer with the aviation assets of two B-29 missions relative to the Hamhung complex in WWII and the Korean War. On 29 August 1945, a 73rd BW 500th BG, 882nd BS, B-29-80-BW, #4470136, "Hog Wild" commanded by Joseph W. McQueen was forced down by a gaggle of four Yaks over Hamhung. "Hog Wild" was alleged to have been one of three B-29s engaged in dropping food and supplies to POWS in the Hamhung area. Speculation exists that the "Hog Wild" was engaged in a photo recon of the nuke/chemical factories. On 22 October 1951, the "Florence Morning News", Florence, SC, recounted that,..."In the air war, nine B-29 Superforts assigned to a 'very special' target in North Korea had turn back when fighter cover failed to arrive..." One of those nine B-29s was 98th BG, 343rd SQ, B-29-40-MO, 44-27341, "Dreamer" (formerly Elsie The Armored Cow?). On 1 March 1951, 7341 attacked the Kogungong-dung Bridge and was damaged by flak and a Mig-15 attack conducted by Lt. Kolyadin Victor Ivanovich. I show 7341 was involved in an accident in Japan on 23 Dec. 1951. We believe that adequate evidence exists to support the supposition that the mission of 22 October 1951 was to remove the threat of alleged nuke-armed Soviet TU-4/TU-85s in Manchuria and the nuke/chemical plants in Hamhung. Perhaps, a covert ground Operation Broken Reed commanded by LTC. Arthur L. Boyd which was commenced subsequent to the failed aerial mission of 22 Oct 1951 was also linked to military operations in these areas. Are you aware of any data that would support our assumptions? Also, I noted Nolan Strange's small black and white photo of 7341, shows a slightly different nose art, was this a prior artwork? Thanks. Regards.John D. Bybee |
