1855325837 Mustang Aces of the Ninth and Fifteenth Air Forces and the RAF
1855325837
by Mark Styling, Jerry Scutts
Paperback - 96 pages (October 1995)
Although best remembered for its exploits with Eighth Air Force units, the Mustang, in its various marks, actually made its combat debut firstly with the RAF in the Army co-operation role, and then with the USAAF's tactically-optimised Ninth and Fifteenth Air Forces. Seeing action in Western Europe and the Mediterranean, pilots like Glenn T Eagleston, John J Voll and Samuel J Brown notched up impressive scores flying P-51Bs and Ds with the 354th, 31st and 52nd Fighter Groups. Rarely given the exposure enjoyed by their high-scoring brethren in the 'Mighty Eighth', this volume at last sets the record straight on Europe's remaining Mustang aces.
From the Publisher
Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series combines full colour artwork, the best archival contemporary photography, and first hand accounts from aces to bring history's greatest airborne conflicts to life.

About the Author
Jerry Scutts has worked in the field of aviation publishing since the late 1960s, writing over 40 books that have covered a broad spectrum of subject matter ranging from US Navy floatplane fighters in World War 2 to the exploits of the USAF_s Phantom IIs over Vietnam. His specialist areas are the Luftwaffe and the US Army Air Forces in World War 2, and he originally appeared on the Osprey list as long ago as 1977, when he wrote the second volume in the now much sought after Air Cam Air War series –- many of the jacket illustrations in this series were also painted by him. Jerry has been a regular contributor to Osprey's Aircraft of the Aces series since its inception in 1994.

Mustang: A Combat Marine

0671649094 Mustang : A Combat Marine
by Gerald P. Averill

0671649094
A mustang, in naval parlance, is an officer commissioned from the enlisted ranks. As Averill points out, the mustang's chances of promotion are infinitely less than those of a direct-commission officer, and "he may not be socially acceptable" to his colleagues. Averill is justly proud of his nearly 25-year career as a hard-charging mustang who served in World War II campaigns, was a battalion and regimental operations officer in Korea, saw duty with an expeditionary force in Thailand, and at the time of retirement in 1965 had attained the rank of lieutenant colonel.

0595206387 Ben Drew : The Katzenjammer Ace
by R. R. Powell, U. L. Drew (Contributor)

Story of the first Me-262 which was shot down by a P-51

Book Description
Urban "Ben" Drew was a Mustang pilot in the 375th Squadron of the 361st Fighter Group of the Eighth Air Force. He was the first to shoot down two of the Luftwaffe's "jet wonder weapon", the Messerschmitt 262, and finished the war as a six plane ace. His tales of air combat over Europe are exciting reading.

This book is far more than a biography of Ben Drew. Powell has worked in details, anecdotes, and the stories of people around Drew,  to make readers feel that they were there. Colonel Christian, Bob McCandliss, Martin Johnson, and the other "Katzenjammer Kid", Bill Kemp, all flew with Drew and shared in the dangers of aerial combat. Their stories are all part of this book.

Georg-Peter Eder flew the Me262 and was one of the Luftwaffe's top aces. He specialized in attacking American bombers and shot  down more of them than anyone. The coincidences that brought two enemies together after Drew was given a medal forty years late, are  intriguing and lead to a last chapter which is as surprising as it is moving.

From the Back Cover
The BOTTISHAM FOUR Mustangs of the 375th Fighter Squadron over England in July, 1944. Each of these aircraft has a story, as do their pilots. This book is about airplanes and men - Colonel Christian the commander of the 461st Fighter Group (in Lou IV) who  disappeared after strafing a railroad yard; Lieutenant McCandliss who fought German jets and became a POW; the Katzenjammer Kids: Bill Kemp, a six plane ace who took on forty Luftwaffe fighters in E2S, and Ben Drew (in E2S), a six plane ace who had his  toughest fight in "Suzy G", was the first to shoot down two Me262s and sank the world's largest airplane; and Georg-Peter Eder,  Luftwaffe ace who shot down more heavy bombers and had more victories flying the Me262 than any man in history.

About the Author
R.R. "Boom" Powell was a career U.S. Navy officer who flew from carrier decks for sixteen years before starting to write about  aviation. His thirty-seven years as a pilot and especially his combat experience, give this biography of a fighter ace an immediacy and  familiarity not found in ordinary histories. Powell has written for several magazines and has a novel with the same setting as the Drew  saga in work as well as a Great War flying tale. He flies Boeing 747 freighters for an international airline when he is not writing or soaring  in his Libelle.      Robert R."Boom" Powell
Grew up on Long Island, NY. Son of an air-minded father who became a B-24 navigator during WW II; S.R.Powell, the comic book artist (Sheena, Mr. Mystic, "Tales from the Crypt"). Does not remember his first flight because he was a babe in his mother's arms. University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on a Navy ROTC scholarship. Soloed a Piper Colt before Pensacola and Navy flight training. Vietnam tour and later instructor pilot in A-4 Skyhawk. Transitioned to RA5C Vigilante and returned to WestPac on USS Kittyhawk. Drafted to be the LSO for RA5C training squadron for three years. Returned to the fleet for deployments on Forrestal and Kittyhawk. Two years in fighter adversary squadron at NAS Oceana followed by tour as Naval Attach to South Africa. Retired as a Commander and after a year flying a corporate Sabreliner was hired by Pan American. First at Pan Am Express on the ATR-42 (including ten ferry flights across the Atlantic), then to Pan Am Airways as a first officer on B-747's to Europe and South America. After Pan Am passed into history, joined Atlas Air and was a captain flying freight world-wide in Boeing 747's--both the classic and computer-managed 400 models.
Earned civil flight instructor ratings while in Navy and trained students from then on. Loves aviation and will try anything. Flew DC-3 charters in Africa, Turbo-porters, historic AD Skyraiders, SNJ's, and aerobatics in anything that can loop. Spent many exuberant weekends as jump pilot for sport parachuting. (Son "Rickster" is a world-class professional skydiver.) Instructor with Air Combat USA, "Be a Fighter Pilot for a Day!" in Sia Marchetti 260's. Discovered soaring and owns a Libelle 15-metre sailplane. Flies old aircraft, including WW 1 replicas, at Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum.
Began writing while in the Navy and has a regular column in The Hook. Continues to write mini-biographies for that journal. Several articles have been published in well know aviation magazines. Much of his writing was done in hotel rooms in wee small hours--local time--in exotic cities around the world.
Married to Marie for 48 years and is happily ensconced with two large Poodles in Virginia Beach on the eastern branch of the Elizabeth River, which is more like a "squidgy creek" at his property. Only tells the story behind his nickname with a drink in his hand.
