The F-18 HornetWhen I was stationed in Lemoore, California, in 1978, we had a chance to see the very first f18 hornet before the navy signed the purchase deal. C. Jeff Dyrek, webmaster. The F-18 Hornet was made by McDonnell Douglas, is a multi role fighter which also performs the attack function. The f18 has an empty weight of 23050 lbs. and a max weight of 56000 lbs. The F-18 uses two General Electric F-404 engines each producing 16,000 lbs of thrust, combined produce 32,000 lbs of thrust. Later versions of the F-18 produce more thrust than this "A" model. The F-18 Hornet is a tremendous all weather, light attack bomber and fighter. The actual designation is the F/A-18 because it is a multi-role aircraft giving the military greater versatility. The F-18 shown in this picture is the only VA-192 airplane with the beautiful colors on its tail. This is the public relations version. The other hornets are all misty grey for better camouflage |
