World War 2 ended shortly after the dropping of two Atomic Bombs on Japan. Instead of flights of B-29's, numbering at 300 plus, the atomic bombs only took one B-29 to do the same job. The United States led Japan to believe that they had many more of these atomic bombs in their arsenal ready to go at any command. These bombs were small, but they really packed a big punch. The first atomic bomb, called Little Boy, was dropped on Hiroshima Japan and the second atomic bomb, called Fat Man, was dropped a couple of days later. At the Yellow Airplane Online Museum |
Little Boy was dropped over
Hiroshima, and Fat Man was used on Nagasaki.
These fiberglass models are on Tinian, and not near the old north field at all, but rather displayed in an un-noticeable area behind a housing complex in a bare lot to the south. I think they should be placed inside the two original bomb storage pits at North Field, which is at the other end of the island. I wouldn’t have even known about these models except I saw them with Google earth.. Ten years ago, both bomb pits were filled with soil and a palm tree planted in each pit. Sometime during the past ten years, someone removed all the dirt and built glass covers, so now you can see inside.. |
