Flying
Leathernecks John Wayne Video ASIN: 6301325540 Studio: Turner Home Entertainment amazone.com John Wayne and Robert Ryan co-star in Flying Leathernecks, Nicholas Ray's intense 1951 war movie that managed to appeal to RKO studio chief Howard Hughes's passion for thrilling aerial footage while supplying Ray's own fascination with the human psyche under near-inhuman duress. Wayne plays Major Dan Kirby, commander of a Marine Flying Corps squadron in the South Pacific of World War II. After witnessing the slaughter of men under his command at Midway, Kirby is battle-hardened and in no mood for the familiar style of his executive officer (Ryan). Emotions are further strained as Kirby's pilots are picked off one by one in grueling missions, leading to a crisis that ultimately forces each man to reevaluate his attitude toward sending men to their likely doom. The drama is built around extensive, startling documentary footage of battle action in the sky, but what makes Flying Leathernecks unique is its literate, psychologically probing script. --Tom Keogh

Remarkable
F4U Corsair Video Description The F4U Corsair was the first World War II aircraft to fly at 400 miles per hour, and racked up an incredible kill ratio of 11 to 1!! Called "Whistling Death" by the Japanese, the Corsair's 2,000 horse-power engine, six 50-caliber machine guns, and 4,000 pound bomb capacity made it a key weapon in the defeat of Imperial Japan. Other titles: "B-24's at War" series: The B-24 Story, Series II: Combat Mission, and Series III: The Road to Japan; Flying Tigers: Documentary.

Roaring
Glory Warbirds - Vought Corsair F4U (1998) ASIN: B00000FDSZ Release Date: September 26, 2000 Studio: Program Power Enterprises If you are a fan of big radial engines in WW2 warbirds then this video is for you. Steve Hinton, a well known plane restorer and racer, takes us through the big birds paces starting with a typical preflight around the plane. Steve then climbs aboard, runs through the cockpit arrangement, fires her up and taxis to the end of the Planes of Fame airstrip. After taking off, Steve shows us the planes excellent flight capabilities and noting some of its limitations. Overall an excellent video, although a little short and for me not enough high speed flybys. However you will be impressed with Steves technical knowledge and the ease with which he delivers it. Oh yes, you get a short story involving a young WW2 pilot and his first flight in a Corsair. |
