Ken Jernstedt, one of 39 Flying
Tiger aces of World War II with 10 confirmed victories, has just defeated a
Japanese Nakajima Ki-27
Col. Robert Scott, the first
commander of the 23rd Fighter Group - successor to Claire Chennault's Flying
Tigers - attacks a formation of Japanese bombers during his last combat mission,
December 26, 1942.
The American Volunteer Group
(AVG), or "Flying Tigers" as they came to be
known, flew against the Japanese before the U.S. was
officially involved in WWII. After their disbandment on July
4, 1942, the pilots of the AVG were allowed to continue
flying if they joined the U.S. Army Air Force's 23rd Fighter Group. One such
pilot, David Lee "Tex" Hill, is shown here standing in front of his Mustang with
some of his ground crew at the airfield in Kweilin, China, after returning from
a mission.
The Curtis P40 Warhawk Specifications
The Curtis P40 came in several versions, the P-40C - Tomahawk, the P-40F, Kittyhawk
II, the P-40N, Kittyhawk IV, and the Curtis P-40 Warhawk. These aircraft
were manufactured by Curtiss Wright Aircraft Corporation. The radial
engines varied from a 1040 hp Allison V-12 to a 1200 hp Allison V-12. The
maximum speed was 343 mph with an initial climb rate of 2,120 fpm for the N
version. the P-40N weighed 6,700 lbs. empty and 11,400 lbs. max. The
length was 33' 4" Wingspan 37' 3.5" and the height was 12' 4" The first
flight of the Curtis P40 was January 1940, the experimental version of the
P-40 was first flown in October 1939. There are many versions of
this plane, these specs cover only one version. |
