2005 North Pole Exhibit Home

The clouds are moving in and the weather can go bad at any time.  In this picture of skiers on the pole you can see them skiing along a lead, a crack in the ice that can extend for many miles in either direction.  These leads usually freeze over in about eight hours and can be walked on in about ten hours.  The date of this picture of skiers is about April 13th 2005.   As April progresses the leads become more abundant, due to the warming temperatures,  and the skiing gets more difficult.  However this year was about ten degrees colder than usual.  In the past several years the polar temperatures were minus twenty five degrees Fahrenheit but this year the temperatures were about minus thirty five degrees.
