| Once the seal skin is cured, Merete
cuts out the fine details on the arctic clothing she is making. She
has read many books on native clothing design and is putting her knowledge
to work. First she marks the back of the skins with the pattern she
wishes to cut, then she uses a very sharp razor knife to cut the patterns.
When I saw her make the cuts, it looked easy. However, after I watched
her for a while I could see that you better have things pretty well planed
out way ahead and have a well trained, steady hand or you are going to make
some serious mistakes.

She has studied the native clothing for many years before she started the business in Longyearbyen on the Svalbard Island group located far north of the most northern tip of Norway's mainland.
