US Navy Blue Angles History Study Notes:
Since 1946, the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron has taken performance flying to new levels "Blue Angel Number One," Roy M. "Butch" Voris, this limited edition print features a wonderful depiction of his Grumman F6F Hellcat that he flew as Officer-in-Charge of the first Navy Flight Exhibition Team - the Blue Angels. His wartime accomplishments and flight team history are all here. The Grumman F8F Bearcat was flown by the Blue Angels from 1946-1952 and was their last propeller-driven aircraft. In the 1960s, a C-121 provided transportation and logistical support for the Blue Angels. While it was a wonderfully graceful airplane, the Connie was not well suited for this support role and so was replaced in 1970 with a C-130 Hercules F-4J Phantom II flown by the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels demonstration team from 1969-1973 F/A-18 Hornet, which the legendary Blue Angels have flown since 1986 Captain Rob Field, Number 1 Flight Leader, The team soon became known worldwide for its spectacular aerobatic stunts. During a trip to the "Big Apple," Lt. Wickendoll came across an advertisement in The New Yorker for the city's popular "Blue Angel" nightclub. Voris liked the name and on July 19 officially made it the team's moniker. On August 25 the squadron upgraded their aircraft to the F8F-1 Bearcat. Though Voris left the team on May 30, 1947 the "Blues" continued to perform nationwide until the start of the Korean War in 1950, when (due to a shortage of pilots) the team was disbanded and its members were ordered to combat duty. Once aboard the aircraft carrier USS Princeton the group formed the core of VF-191, Satan's Kittens. |
