This is John Martin Walker, my grandpa who fought in 23 engagements in the Civil war. He was wounded once by a piece of cannon ball about 3 inches long and 1 inch thick. They were going to take off his leg but he held his pistol on them and threatened to shoot them if they tried. They saved his leg but he had to walk with a cane. He lived to the age of 97 years. His dad lived to 112.

He was a full blooded Scotsman who married a Dutchwoman right from Holland. Raised 19 kids. My dad was the baby. He was born in 1898. All the Walkers lived into their 90's. He was born in Missiouri. but fought for the North against the Politics of almost all his family.

This is my Grand Father John Martin Walker who fought in 23 engagements in the Civil War. He was in the Indiana Volunteers. You can see that on his photo. I believe he was only 18 when this picture was taken. On the photo you see print that says "you will not cut off my leg. He held his pistol in his hand when the field Surgeon said they were going to cut off his leg. He was struck with a piece of Cannonball about 3 inches long and about 2 inches wide. Grandpa was Scotch and Grandma, her name was Marenda, she was from Holland so my dad was 1/2 Scotch and 1/2 Dutch. Grandpa lived with us in Spalding Idaho where he died at 97 years of age in 1929 when I was four. His family lived in MO. He was the only one of the boys who fought for the North. Dad had 10 brothers and 8 sisters. His sister Daisy Spivey ( she and husband Art were Pioneers on the Snake River) live to 103 years of age. We lived on the Nez Perce reservation when I was little and I could speak the language pretty good too. My aunt Mae married an Nez Perce so I have several Indian cousins.
