Airplanes are very complex and are always maintenance hungry
anywhere you may fly them.
A military is even more complex, is flown to the extremes of the planes
mechanical limits, and
has bullet holes everywhere. These P-47's are more maintenance hungry than
anything that you can
imagine. They don't use gas, they burn money. It takes a tremendous
amount of money and
lots of man hours to keep these planes in the air and keep them protecting the
base as well
as to fight against the enemy.
It's an integrated unit of operations all the way from the
Commanding Officer and the Fighter Pilots down to the guy who washes the dishes
in the chow hall. If any single link in his chain is broken, the mission
cannot be completed
and the operation is lost. This is why every maintenance man turning a
screw, or every
dishwasher cleaning a plate is just as important and essential as the fighter
pilots
and even the generals themselves. It only takes one link to break to fail
the operation.
